BACP 2026 Ethical Framework
All BACP accredited counsellors and supervisors are bound by an ethical code of practice. From 3rd November 2026 the new Ethical Framework comes into effect.

The new framework places a stronger emphasis on ethical decision-making, collaboration, relationships, accountability and being able to explain the reasoning behind professional decisions.
Here on this page I have laid out some useful resources to support my supervisee's and other therapists in how we all will use the new framework to inform ethical decision making and guide us in our practice.
Checklist for Private Practice
I have prepared a checklist you can download here to manage the changes long term, but if you are looking at what to prioritise immediately I would work on the following 5 items now:

-
REVIEW YOUR CONTRACT - Make sure your working agreement reflects the new Framework, confidentiality, privacy, boundaries, fees, communication and ending arrangements.
-
VIEW YOUR PRIVACY & DATA PROTECTION - Check your Privacy Notice, records, storage, email, devices and third-party systems.
-
CREATE/UPDATE YOUR CLINICAL WILL - Make a plan for your clients and records if you suddenly become unable to practise. Useful template and checklist here.
-
REVIEW YOUR SAFEGUARDING ARRANGEMENTS - Make sure your policy, referral pathways, emergency contacts and confidentiality arrangements are current.
-
REVIEW YOUR DIGITAL & AI PRACTICE - Know what technology you are using, what happens to your data, and whether your use is ethically and legally appropriate. Government guidance here. BACP Therapy Today article here.
